Spill Containment
Spill containment is a vital component of workplace safety and environmental management, designed to prevent hazardous substances like oil, chemicals, or polluted water from spreading. It is structured into three main layers—primary, secondary, and tertiary—to ensure comprehensive protection.
Types of Spill Containment
Containment is typically categorized into three levels, providing a layered approach to safety:
- Primary Containment: This is the container holding the hazardous liquid, such as a drum, tank, or bottle.
- Secondary Containment: A “backup” system, such as spill pallets with built-in sumps, containment berms, or drip trays, designed to capture leaks if the primary container fails. It is required by regulation for many types of storage, including drums and Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs).
- Tertiary Containment: High-level systems, such as sealed drainage networks and remote-controlled valves, used in high-risk facilities to prevent spills from leaving the site if both primary and secondary systems fail.
